Looking for an extra dose of Fox’s “Empire” until Season 2? Then set yourself a reminder for the 2015 TV Land Awards to hear “Empire” cast member Jennifer Hudson bring a modern break to the nostalgia fest with a number from the Season 1 finale. Hudson is scheduled to sing “Whatever Makes You Happy” at the awards’ April 11 taping.

Jennifer Hudson’s rise to fame owes much to the changing landscape of television and music as the recent success of “Empire.” The multi-Grammy and Oscar winning actress got her big break on a little Fox show called “American Idol,” one of the first shows to ride the rise of Reality TV. She took a turn in the judge’s seat for the UK version of “The X Factor” in 2011.

After a show-stopping turn with Beyoncé in “Dream Girls,” the singer hasn’t stopped working since. She’s appeared in other movies like “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Winnie Mandela” and “Black Nativity,” with the occasional guest TV appearances before signing on for “Empire.” No word yet on the Lee Daniels show if Hudson will return for Season 2.

On “Empire,” Jennifer Hudson became a recurring cast member in the last few tense episodes as Andre’s (Trai Byers) musical therapist, Michelle. The Christian gospel singer was signed to Empire in a power play by Andre’s father, Lucious (Terrence Howard). That betrayal spurred Andre to mount his own coup for the right to control Empire Records.

The TV Land Awards show will be hosted by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” actor Terry Crews and present honors to longtime TV legends Betty White and Donny and Marie Osmond. A special tribute will be given to red carpet comedienne Joan Rivers. The casts of “Parenthood,” “The Wonder Years” and “Ally McBeal” will reunite for their respective awards.
