One person died Tuesday in St. Louis after the city saw 9 inches of rain in one day, breaking a record of 6.85 inches that was set 107 years ago. Officials described the rain as "catastrophic."

Six inches of rain hit St. Louis in just a few hours, causing major flash flooding conditions, and leading to dangerous situations with drivers trapped and houses flooded.

“The floodwaters were quick and sudden, like nothing I’ve ever experienced before in my life. The rain was literally non-stop pouring down for all hours of the night pouring into this morning,” Brittney Perry, a 32-year-old St. Louis resident, told Accuweather.

“It was extremely horrific watching our whole basement and garage flood, losing several sentimental items including an electric guitar from my late father," she added. Her father died earlier this year and, she said, his car is one of those "seen submerged in our backyard,” Perry said.

One person was found dead in a vehicle that was stuck in "approximately eight and a half" feet of water, Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson said.

The flood caused a gas leak at the St. Louis Zoo and the city's iconic Gateway Arch was forced to close. One St. Louis suburb saw over 11 inches of rain.

"We want to ensure that our communities have every resource available to respond and protect Missourians," Gov. Mike Parson said.
