Barry (Grant Gustin) is willing to do anything just to get Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) out of the Speed Force in tomorrow’s Season 3, episode 16 of “The Flash.”

“Someone always has to be trapped in the Speed Force prison,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly. “So the question in the episode becomes: Is Barry going to sacrifice himself for Wally?”

While it remains to be seen whether Team Flash will be able to figure out a way to rescue Wally without Barry taking his place in the Speed Force, Gustin told the news outlet that the Scarlet Speedster is willing to be trapped in the Speed Force permanently just to send Wally back to Earth.

“He’s willing to make the ultimate sacrifice when he enters the Speed Force,” Gustin said. “Barry is willing and wants to stay and replace Wally in the Speed Force forever. He thinks it’s what he deserves, to spend the rest of eternity in the Speed Force.”

As previously reported, Barry’s second trip into the Speed Force is unlike his first. If his last visit was like heaven, his next journey there is more like going to hell. As seen in the trailer for the episode, Barry gets some tough talk from people he feels he has failed, including Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) and Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell). But why does the Speed Force take a different approach with Barry this time around?

“The Speed Force takes a little bit more of an aggressive approach with Barry just because of [the] choices that have been made since the end of Season 2 leading up to where we’re at now,” Gustin explained. “They use different characters that will get under Barry’s skin in a different way, but also they’re just not quite as understanding anymore because of how many decisions Barry has made that have affected time and affected the timeline. So it’s a pretty different Speed Force experience than last year.”

“The Flash” Season 3, episode 16, titled “Into the Speed Force,” airs on Tuesday, March 14 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
