Barry (Grant Gustin) is heading back into the Speed Force in Season 3, episode 16 of “The Flash.” And although the Scarlet Speedster has been into the Speed Force before, Gustin said that his second trip is unlike his first.

“Because we did it last year, I think Barry went in knowing what to expect, more or less — but then it is not the same experience,” Gustin told TVLine.

As seen in the trailer for the episode, Barry meets versions of Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett), Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) and Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller) in the Speed Force. Although the trio gives Barry some tough talk, Gustin said that the incarnations of the late characters are actually helping him rescue Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) and ultimately avert Iris’ (Candice Patton) death at the hands of Savitar (voiced by Tobin Bell).

Gustin said that the effect Eddie, Ronnie and Leonard has Barry’s psyche is “a pretty drastic one.” But the actor noted that they are just trying to help his character, “even if it means teaching him a lesson in a very tough way, or throwing him a bone.”

Although the challenges that Barry needs to overcome in his trip are tough, Gustin said that things are much harder for Wally. “Wally is being put through emotional turmoil that only Barry can understand,” Gustin said. “And that’s why Barry goes in to get him.”

At the end of Season 3, episode 15, Wally took Savitar’s place in the Speed Force, allowing the villainous speedster to escape and return to Earth. If Team Flash fails to rescue Wally, a.k.a. Kid Flash, from being trapped in the Speed Force, then the young speedster ultimately fulfills one of Savitar’s three prophecies, which states that one from the team will suffer a fate worse than death.

“The Flash” Season 3, episode 16, titled “Into the Speed Force,” airs on Tuesday, March 14 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
