Kofi Kingston becoming the first African-born WWE Champion in history at WrestleMania 35 was a massive moment for fans, but his glorified squash match against Brock Lesnar to drop the title was a big blemish that fans have still not forgotten.

Former WWE tag team star and current All Elite Wrestling (AEW) performer Dax Harwood revealed on his podcast that he messaged Kingston following the match.

"I was very, very upset. I apologized to him and said, 'I'm so sorry this happened to you, man. We're so upset. I can't believe this is for real,' not because of obviously anything with Brock, but how much he had worked and how hard he had worked to get to this point," Harwood mentioned.

"I saw him outside of Vince's (McMahon) office or go into Vince's office every single week... to try to make his championship run better. He worked so hard to be a great champion."

WWE fans were strapped into their seats at the then-named Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on October 4, 2019, raring and hoping for Kingston to remain the champion despite facing Lesnar.

Excitement turned into horror for those wanting to see Kingston make the most out of his championship run as Lesnar quickly picked him up for an F5 and the pin, ending his reign in just eight seconds.

Kingston's run with the WWE Championship was disappointing to say the least, but to no fault of his own as was mentioned by Harwood.

WWE had booked Kingston into programs with the likes of Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, Samoa Joe and Randy Orton–all of which would have produced classics inside the ring based on conventional thinking.

However, WWE's creative team failed to present Kingston as a believable champion and it did not take long for fan opinion to shift from approval to downright apathy.

Having Kingston drop the title to Lesnar would not have been a big problem in the eyes of many had the match been a lot more competitive and it seems that the fans are not alone in their lamentation of Kingston's title run.

"It wasn't for lack of trying because I saw him every week, man, try his damnedest to make something of nothing and it broke all of our hearts, you know, the whole locker room... Not anything to do with Brock, but because Kofi had worked so hard, and seeing someone work so hard for so long, to get this opportunity taken away from him," Harwood lamented.

Currently, Kingston is serving as one-half of the NXT Tag Team Champions with fellow New Day member Xavier Woods and this feat allowed him to become the first-ever WWE star to win the traditional Triple Crown and Tag Team Triple Crown.

At 41 years old, Kingston is well past his pro wrestling prime, but fans can still expect to get the best from him inside the ring and on the mic.
