Valentine’s Day may be meant for lovers, but ladies all over the world will celebrate Monday their closest confidants the day before during Galentine’s Day. The holiday, which was created by Amy Poehler’s “Parks and Recreation” character Leslie Knope, recognizes friendship among women.

The holiday was first introduced during a season two episode of the NBC comedy series, during which Knope said every year on the day before Valentine’s Day women would leave their significant others to celebrate their fellow lady friends.

“Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every Feb. 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lillth Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas,” she said.

Simply put, Galentine’s Day is a holiday honoring sister-ship.

Check out a few ways to celebrate Galentine’s Day Monday below:

Eat Waffles: Poehler’s character and her gal pals celebrated Galentine’s Day by pounding down brunch favorites, and they specifically loved waffles and frittatas. Pull out the waffle maker and make a few breakfast favorites to share with friends or go the old fashioned route and just pop a few Ego’s in the toaster.

Exchange Gifts: During Knope’s Galentine’s Day celebration, she gave all her girlfriends hand-crocheted flower pens, mosaic portraits and 5,000 word essays detailing all the reasons she loves them and considers them friends. While gifts don’t have to be as intricate as Knope’s, gifting small trinkets that represent friendship or items that may be particularly dear to a friend's heart goes just as far.

Go to dinner: Nothing shows how much you care about friends as much as spending quality time with them. If work gets in the way of brunching, spend Galentine’s Day evening sharing the day’s accomplishments with your biggest supporters and encouragers over a nice meal and a few bottles of wine.

Throw a party: On “Parks and Recreation,” Knops and her BFFs would throw a huge party flowing with mimosas to celebrate the holiday. Going out for drinks and dancing with gal pals can be just as fun and a great way to reminisce all the good times shared amongst friends or stay in and booze up while binge watching “Parks and Recreation.”
