George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States, turned 71 Thursday. Bush led the country's response to the 9/11 attacks and initiated the Iraq War in 2003.

Born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut, Bush is the eldest of six children of George Herbert Walker Bush and Barbara Pierce Bush. Bush went to Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, after his family moved to Houston in 1961. He enlisted in the Texas Air National Guard right after his graduation. In 1999, Bush began his quest for the presidency and narrowly won the electoral college vote in 2000.
