The Milwaukee Bucks can finally breathe a sigh of relief now that Giannis Antetokounmpo has announced his intention to sign a contract extension. The impending deal gives the superstar forward the most lucrative contract in NBA history.

Antetokounmpo will sign the five-year, supermax contract worth $228.2 million, The Athletic’s Shams Charania first reported. The two-time MVP is set to earn a $27.528 million salary for the 2020-21 season with the extension kicking in for the 2021-22 season.

The final year of the contract includes a player option.

Based on a projected $112.4 million salary cap, Antetokounmpo will make $39.3 million in the first season of his new contract, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks. The 26-year-old's salary will increase every year, going to $42.5 million in 2022-23 and $45.6 million in 2023-24.

The Bucks will pay Antetokounmpo $48.8 million in 2024-25. If Antetokounmpo opts-in to the final year of his contract, he’ll make $51.9 million in 2025-26.

Heading into this upcoming season, Antetokounmpo has already earned $79.47 million in seven NBA seasons. After being selected 15th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, Antetokounmpo had a $1.792 million rookie salary. He earned less than $3 million in each of his first four seasons before a $100 million extension raised his salary to $22.47 million in 2017-18.

Forbes listed Antetokounmpo as the 18th highest-paid athlete of 2020 with an estimated $47.6 million in earnings, most of which came from endorsements.

Celebrity Net Worth estimates Antetokounmpo’s net worth to be $60 million.

Due to his young age and changes to the NBA salary structure, Antetokounmpo could be among the NBA’s highest-paid players for the next decade.
