A major golf tournament is set to begin for the first time in nearly 13 months. The 2020 PGA Championship starts Thursday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco as the sports world continues to get back on track during the coronavirus pandemic.

Golf was one of the first professional sports to return, doing so in mid-June after a two-month hiatus. The PGA Tour was forced to adjust its schedule, canceling the Open Championship while pushing the U.S. Open and the Masters to September and November, respectively.

The PGA Championship was moved from May to August, and it kicks off what should be an exciting next few months for the sport.

Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka stand out as the favorites to win the year’s first major championship. The two golfers finished atop the leaderboard at this past weekend’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Thomas is ranked No. 1 on the tour and has three wins this year to go along with nine top-10 finishes.

Koepka has won the PGA Championship in each of the last two years. The 30-year-old had a top-four finish at all four major tournaments in 2019.

Rory McIlroy, Bryson Dechambeau and Jon Rahm are considered to be among the top contenders.

Tiger Woods will be part of the field. Woods has only competed in one tournament since the pandemic began. He won the 2019 Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship one month later.

The PGA Championship winner will earn a $2.7 million first-place prize.
