“Grey’s Anatomy” is coming out of the darkness for Season 12 of the hit ABC series. During the 2015 Television Critics Association summer press tour, Shonda Rhimes, the mastermind behind the medical drama, promised audiences that “Grey’s Anatomy” would take on a “much lighter tone” following the heart-breaking death of everyone’s favorite doctor, Derek (Patrick Dempsey).

And it looks like the brighter plot she was referring to will focus around the blooming relationships set to occur in the upcoming installment. But which characters will be locking lips in Season 12? Well, Rhimes dished that viewers can expect “some pretty exciting” new romances for Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) in the impending installment.

“They’re going to both be dating women,” Rhimes told TVLine, explaining that she wants to “honor” Callie’s bisexuality. “We’ve established that she’s dated guys. But in terms of where she’s going now, she’s going to be dating a woman.”

Um, “a woman”? Does that means Callie will be diving head first into a serious, long term relationship this fall? And if so, we wonder how Arizona will take the news that her ex-wife has become smitten with someone new.

In March, Capshaw answered that inquiry when she revealed to Entertainment Weekly that while she understood why fans shipped Calzona, she was hoping on-screen lovers wouldn’t rekindle their romance following their shocking Season 11 break up.

“Only because they had to go through so much to make that decision to be apart, it’s so hard to think about them being together. They’re just getting to the point where that’s all good. I would feel bad if they then took steps backwards and ended up in a relationship that was super challenging,” she said. “Everyone longs for the beginning, I get that, you want them to go back to the beginning, but you can’t do that with anything in life.”

But Callie and Arizona won’t be the only ones dipping their toes into the dating pool throughout Season 12. Kelly McCreary, who portrays Maggie on the series, revealed that Rhimes plans on exploring her character's love life “some more” in the upcoming season. Guess it's safe to say love is in the air -- and throughout the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 will premiere on ABC on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. EDT.
