KEY POINTS

  • Rockstar Games has not yet confirmed that "GTA 6" is in the works
  • Rumors about the game have been rife for years
  • Job listings by Rockstar Games triggered speculations that it might launch soon
  • Recent news about its release date says otherwise

Fans remain hopeful that Rockstar Games might finally announce the heavily rumored game "GTA 6" very soon. But if the latest claim is anything to go by, the game might still be four to five years away.

Industry insider Okami shared on Twitter recently that "GTA 6" might be released at the end of the new generation gaming consoles Xbox Series X and PS5's life cycle. In a tweet, Okami mentioned that they would be surprised if Rockstar Games' highly anticipated "Grand Theft Auto" installment would be available by 2025. The insider suggested that fans might get their hands on the game by 2026 or 2027.

Okami's tweet surfaced amid recent speculations that "GTA 6" could arrive sometime in 2022 or 2023. This claim was triggered by a series of job listings Rockstar Games posted across various locations. Many fans believe that the gaming studio is revving up the development of its games by hiring more people to work on them.

The job listing for India sought qualified game testers with an understanding and knowledge of previous titles developed by the gaming studio. Fans were convinced that the job listing was for a project that had something to do with a game sequel, perhaps "Bully 2" or "GTA 6." With game testers wanted, fans speculated that a potential announcement of the said project was about to come.

However, just like all other game developers, Rockstar Games continuously hires game testers. Some believe that the game testers are for the upcoming "GTA 5" Expanded and Enhanced Edition, which the gaming studio announced last year. The new-generation version of the hit "Grand Theft Auto" installment is slated for release in the coming months. It is just on time to be tested ahead of its launch.

As of writing, neither Rockstar Games nor its parent company Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that "GTA 6" is in the works. Take-Two Interactive previously mentioned that Rockstar Games would confirm it if a new project is going to be announced.

In the absence of official confirmation or announcement, however, gamers should take the latest rumor about the release date of "GTA 6" with a pinch of salt.
