Although there was plenty of backlash after Blake Shelton was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, it seems his girlfriend Gwen Stefani was excited that her beau landed the coveted title.

During an interview with E! News, Stefani gushed over “The Voice” coach’s new honor because she believed it reflected positively on herself. “How rad is my life right now? Like, how good does that make me look,” she said.

Following People’s announcement, Shelton made an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Thursday to talk about his honor, and the singer seemed thrilled about the publication’s choice.

“You know, I said this in the magazine—when I did my interview for Sexiest Man Alive—that I’d been fat and ugly my whole life, and if only for one year I get to be sexy, I’m going to milk this for everything that it’s worth,” he told the host.

The country star was clearly over the moon about the title, however, Twitter was less than pleased. Opposers even dug up Shelton’s old tweets from 2011, where he came across as racist and homophobic. The “I’ll Name the Dogs” singer issued an apology shortly after the offensive tweets initially resurfaced in 2016.

“Everyone knows comedy has been a major part of my career and it's always been out there for everyone to see. That said, anyone who knows me also knows I have no tolerance for hate of any kind or form,” he said in a statement at the time.

“Can my humor be inappropriate and immature? Yes. Hateful? Never. That said I deeply apologize to anyone who may be offended.”

Nonetheless, many were not happy that People chose to elect someone who had a past of being insensitive.

“2017 is supposed to be the year of tossing out trash men, yet Blake Shelton can tweet all the racist jokes his heart desires and still be People’s Sexiest Man Alive,” one person tweeted.

“I can think of a million more people who are sexier than Blake Shelton the homophobe, including my fiance,” another person wrote.

Despite the backlash, it looks like Stefani has every intention of sticking by the Sexiest Man Alive’s side.
