The body of a murdered 19-year-old woman was discovered inside a suitcase thrown amid the trash in Ukraine. A homeless man who found the body, informed locals who immediately alerted authorities.

The teen identified as Daria Bilous, was originally from Kharkiv region in Ukraine but had relocated in order to study in a vocational college in Dnipro, central Ukraine. She was just wearing a bra and jeans with her body curled up.

The victim was last seen celebrating New Year’s Eve in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. It was believed that she was fine when she returned to Dnipro Thursday, Jan. 3. The timeline between her return and her death has not been established by law enforcement yet. “It has not been established yet how she got back to the city, and what she did,” a police spokesperson said.

According to forensic reports Bilous died of strangulation. While Mirror Online reported the victim to have suffered a strong blow with a blunt instrument to her neck, another local publications said that a pointed object was used to inflict damage on her neck.

Witnesses told police that five men – suspected to be behind the murder of Bilous – were seen trying to get rid of the deceased’s body. “A neighbor from our apartment block said that at 10 p.m. [local time, 3 p.m. EST] Friday [Jan 4], he saw five men walking in the yard and throwing the suitcase in the garbage bin,” a resident of the area said.

It was also not immediately clear if she traveled alone or was in company of anyone. People in her social circle were being interrogated by police regarding Bilous’ murder.

According to the Informant, the victim’s parents were deprived of their daughter’s custody when she was 17 years and social services were responsible for the wellbeing of the teenager. She had been staying in a dormitory, from the time she transferred to Dnipro.

In another instance last month, a 15-year-old from India was accused of strangling a 10-year-old boy for refusing him sex, before stuffing the victim’s body in a suitcase. After killing the victim in a public toilet, the unidentified juvenile carried the body in a suitcase and dumped it in a drain. He then got one of his friends to call the victim’s family and make a payday out of it.

“The victim’s father runs a small shop in Sakinaka. He received a call around 10.30 p.m. [local time, 12 noon EST] from a man asking for Indian rupees 500,000 [$7,145] or else his child would be in danger. The parents then approached police with the number and filed a complaint that their son had been kidnapped,” a police officer said.
