The plant-based chicken alternative from KFC called “Beyond Fried Chicken” will make its nationwide debut on Jan. 10, KFC and Beyond Meat announced on Wednesday.

“...Over two years later we can say, ‘mission accomplished,’” said KFC U.S. President Kevin Hochman in a press release.

Beyond Meat developed the product for KFC in a two-year lengthy process, which began in 2019 with a test of Beyond Fried Chicken in Atlanta. The product sold out in less than five hours. In 2020, the fried chicken brand expanded the test run of the product to chain stores in Nashville, Charlotte, and Southern California.

The plant-based chicken will now go nationwide to all KFC chain stores for a limited time while supplies last and prices start at $6.99. However, while the product is vegan, it is not prepared in a vegan or vegetarian manner.

Ethan Brown, the founder and CEO of Beyond Meat, expressed excitement about the upcoming nationwide sale of Beyond Fried Chicken at KFC in a press release, saying that it provides a “delicious experience consumers expect from this iconic chain, but also provides the added benefits of plant-based meat.”

KFC is not the only chain store expanding or beginning its plant-based options. Chains like Dunkin’ and Starbucks already have plant-based breakfast sandwich options while big fast-food chains like Burger King, Chipotle, and Mcdonald's have announced plans to begin plant-based options. However, KFC is the first national U.S. fast-food restaurant to introduce plant-based chicken options.
