A former Florida teacher was accused of having sex with and impregnating a former student who was a minor. Loren Neely, 29, was charged with having unlawful sexual activity with someone who is 16 or 17 years old and booked into Duval County jail, March 29.

According to the jail records recently obtained by local news outlet News4Jax, Neely was an Orange Park Junior High School teacher who was allegedly involved in a two-year online relationship with a former student. After interrogating the unidentified victim, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office learned she had become pregnant following a sexual encounter with the accused at her house in Jacksonville.

When Neely found out about the pregnancy, he tried to offer his ex-student money to get an abortion, the victim told the authorities. The girl ended up not having an abortion and was 30 weeks pregnant when she spoke to the police.

An unnamed relative, who was taking care of the victim, told the news outlet the accused was the girl’s seventh grade teacher in the past. When she was in eighth grade, she began helping him out with grading papers. Both of them stayed in touch even when the girl went to high school. The victim’s family initially did not suspect any inappropriate relationship between the two as they knew Neely helped her cope emotionally with some personal family crisis that she was going through.

The girl’s family learned about her alleged sexual relationship with her former teacher when she told them she was pregnant.

“It is unbelievable and very sad. Her almost entire childhood has been robbed,” her relative said, adding that the victim was getting through the ordeal with "lots of prayers, counseling and help from family and friends."

An investigation was launched into Neely’s conduct March 8, after the sheriff’s office received reports of the victim becoming pregnant after she had a consensual sexual relationship with the accused. The victim also provided screenshots of her conversation with him. In some of the messages, Neely reportedly asked the victim to lie about their relationship if the school authorities asked her about it.

The Clay county school district released the following statement on Neely’s arrest:

“Loren Neely was a teacher at Orange Park Junior High. Neely was hired in 2013 after an extensive background check required for all employees. Upon notification from law enforcement about the investigation, he was immediately removed from the school. Neely resigned at the end of last month. The District would like to reassure families and staff that this employee had no history of incidents related to the current charges brought to light. The District will continue to take every step to protect students as safety is the top priority.”

Neely remained in jail as of Wednesday on $250,000 bond.
