Hold onto your hats, “Homeland” fans -- the season finale might include a death. According to a report from TVLine.com, the cast of the Showtime drama series was recently seen shooting an “elaborate” funeral sequence at a chapel on location in Cape Town, South Africa. The scene is assumed to be featured in the program’s Season 4 finale, set to air next month.

While the site did not specify who the funeral was for, “Homeland” fans might already have a clue as to which character could meet their demise this season. Based on the past several episodes, all signs point to former CIA director Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) being killed off.

In Season 4 episode 5, Saul was kidnapped at the airport in Islamabad, Pakistan, while trailing suspected terrorist ally Farhad Ghazi. After following him into the terminal bathroom, Saul was accosted by an unknown man with a needle and carefully taken out of the airport in a wheelchair under the guise that he was asleep. In episode 6, it was revealed to the CIA that Saul was in the custody of wanted terrorist and known killer Haissam Haqqani (Numan Acar).

During last week’s installment, Saul's longtime pal, Islamabad station chief Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), and the CIA began their attempt to rescue him from Haqqani's clutches despite her belief that Saul would rather die than be used as a bargaining chip. “Mountains are about to be moved on his behalf. Lives risked. He would do anything right now to avoid that,” Carrie said to Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) in episode 7. “He would put a bullet in his own brain.”

While “Homeland” viewers will have to wait to learn Saul’s fate, the promo for episode 8, "Halfway to a Donut," reveals he will not go down without a fight. “Don’t do it,” Saul tells Carrie, the CIA team and members of Pakistani intelligence after Haqqani reveals he wants to use Saul as part of a prisoner exchange. “Tell them to go to hell!” he says. In a later clip, Saul is seen fighting Haqqani’s guards.

If Saul is killed off in the Season 4 finale, he won’t be the first main character to die on-screen. Last season viewers were shocked (and angry) when Carrie’s lover and former POW Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) was hanged during the episode 12 closer, “The Star.”

“Homeland” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on Showtime.
