Although Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth appear to have a friendly relationship, the Duchess of Cambridge didn’t receive a warm welcome into the royal family. However, she managed to break the tension and form a sentimental bond with Prince William’s grandmother.

When William began dating Kate in the early 2000s, the royal family was unsure whether she would fit into their exclusive world. Although Kate came from a wealthy family, she was still considered a commoner and had to prove herself to her superiors.

Royal commentator, Erin Hill told People that Kate was forced to face the realities of royal life. However, she was lucky enough to win over Queen Elizabeth before she married Prince William.

“Growing up in the English countryside with a close-knit family, these are values that are really important to the Royal Family. The Queen loves the outdoors, she’s happiest when she’s wearing her tweeds out there, with her horses, and this is something she shares with Kate,” she explained.

“And William has longed for a close family since losing his mother when he was so young. Kate, being very close to her parents, her siblings and William’s as well, it all comes together,” the commentator added.

Due to her long time relationship with Prince William, Kate was “well prepared” for her new life and role as the Duchess of Cambridge. “Kate had almost a decade as William’s girlfriend, so she had a front seat to the pressures and pitfalls of what it takes to be in the Royal Family,” she shares.

“She knew very well what she was getting into around the time of her wedding, she was well prepared. She is the perfect person for this – she has a great temperament, she’s a great support for William, who will be the king, so she’s in the right role.”

Prince William and Kate married in 2011 and have since welcomed three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. As the couple continues to raise their children, they have tried to protect them from too much exposure to the royal spotlight.

“Kate really wants as much normalcy as she can for these kids. We’re seeing that when they brought Charlotte to school, Kate holding her hand right up to the door, carrying their backpacks,” Hill revealed.

“They are known as George and Charlotte Cambridge in school so they’re trying to make it as normal as possible. They’re doing their homework at night with them, spending time outdoors,” she continued.

Prince William and Kate are expected to be King and Queen someday, and the two do their best to stick to royal traditions. However, the couple has made it clear that they have no problem putting a modern twist on certain traditions.

“She’s following the tradition, as set by the Queen, which is really important to her, but she’s bringing in her own values and traditions, like having her parents for the outings to watch George and Charlotte. She’s creating this perfect mix.”
