Teddy Ruxpin is making a comeback! Children who grew up in the 80s and early 90s will remember the iconic toy bear that talked and moved. Now, Wicked Cool Toys is bringing back the toy, which was first released in 1985.
“The kids who embraced him back then are 28-40 years old now,” Wicked Cool Toys co-president Jeremy Padawer said in a statement. “They have young kids who they’d want to introduce Teddy Ruxpin to. We felt the time was right to bring back this nostalgic toy but with the right technology to fit the time.”
There were four versions of the Teddy Ruxpin doll released before it went out of production. The new Teddy Ruxpin toy has “over 40 full color LCD eye animations,” and is being marketed as “the first animatronic smart toy.” The doll has an internal hard drive with 10 stories pre-programmed, however, more are available to download.
But what about the original Teddy Ruxpin doll? Those who had the toy will remember that it blinked and played stories via cassette. The toy did have some flaws, though. Once the cassette warped the toy’s voice changed to a slightly “demonic” one.
Don’t expect a big payday if you still have your old Teddy Ruxpin doll. One site states that a mint condition doll could sell for approximately $1,000. Of course, you have to find someone to buy it for that price. Old dolls in the original boxes are selling on eBay for as low as $95. Others from 1985 can be found as low as $30 online. The new Teddy Ruxpin doll is selling for $99.
