The Huawei P20 Pro made headlines earlier this year for having triple cameras on its back. Unsurprisingly, it looks like the Chinese phone maker will continue using three cameras on the Huawei P30 Pro, albeit with some upgrades.

A new rumor out of China claims that the Huawei P30 Pro will be the first smartphone to use Sony’s upcoming 38-megapixel IMX607 image sensor, as first reported by MySmartPrice. The Sony IMX607 is believed to be a 1/1.8-inch stacked image sensor with a square pixel array. The sensor is also said to feature Quad-Pixel PDAF that delivers faster autofocus speeds.

Simply put, the Sony IMX607 is a rather large image sensor. When it comes to mobile photography, a larger sensor usually means that it can produce better image quality compared to other sensors that are currently being used by other smartphone cameras. That said, it’s also important to point out that the IMX607 has a smaller pixel count than the 40-megapixel sensor that’s on the Huawei P20 Pro. Even though the new Sony sensor could produce better images, pixel size will effectively be reduced.

The new Sony sensor will most likely be used for the main rear camera on the Huawei P30 Pro. The upcoming handset is believed to arrive with three rear cameras, but no details about the other two shooters have been leaked. It’s possible that Huawei could just use the same 20MP monochrome and 8MP telephoto cameras found on the P20 Pro for the P30 Pro, but that’s purely speculation at this point.

Putting three cameras on the back of the Huawei P30 Pro may sound like a no-brainer, but there is also a wild rumor going around that it might actually arrive with four. Earlier this week, notable Twitter leaker Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) shared images of alleged smartphone cases intended for the Galaxy S10 Plus and the Huawei P30 Pro.

The image of the clear case for the Huawei P30 Pro shows that it has a vertically-aligned camera cutout that’s large enough for three cameras. However, right next to that is another pill-shaped, yet smaller cutout. This has caused wild speculation that the smaller cutout could be for a fourth rear camera on the P30 Pro.

There’s currently no information available on the potential fourth camera. As such, some believe that the smaller cutout may be intended for something else. Phone Arena speculates that the smaller cutout may be for a larger dual-tone flash. Slashleaks also shared a render of what this new flash module could look like on the Huawei P30 Pro.

Ice Universe also said that the Huawei P30 Pro will still arrive with a curved OLED display like the P20 Pro. However, the leaker also said that Huawei may stick to using a notch in the display. There’s the possibility of having a waterdrop-style notch, as well. The Huawei P30 Pro doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will likely launch sometime in early 2019, according to Tech Radar.
