KEY POINTS

  • Man City defeated Real Madrid 2-1 Wednesday in Round of 16's 1st leg
  • Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne were Man City's goal scorers
  • The return leg will be played at Etihad on March 17

Manchester City defeated hosts Real Madrid 2-1 in Bernabeu in Champions League’s Round of 16’s 1st leg Wednesday.

There have been very few clubs that have gone and beaten Real in their backyard and hence this result was indeed special for Man City, who could not be playing the tournament in the next two seasons because of the two-year ban from UEFA.

Even though Man City boss Pep Guardiola said it was a great result, he also mentioned that if there is any team that can “overcome this situation”, it is Real. Guardiola, who has managed Real’s arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the past, he is well aware of the capabilities of Real, the side that has won a record 13 Champions League titles.

It was Real who took the lead in the 60th minute when Isco scored but strikes from Man City’s star duo of Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne handed them a 2-1 win, which turned out to be the team’s first-ever win at a major European team in the knockout stage of the competition.

“To win at the Bernabeu is a great satisfaction for us. It is amazing to be able to win here for us because we are not used to doing these things. We hope it will help us in the future to believe in ourselves and to be able to go to any stadium and play the way we did against Real,” Guardiola said in a post-match interview.

Man City, who have never qualified for the final of the Champions League, will not be taking the second leg for granted even for a second, considering Real’s vast success and experience in the tournament.

“It's just the first part, it's not three points. If one team can overcome this situation, for experience, for everything, it is this club, but of course, it is a good result. I am so proud of course but it is just the first step, we have another game, it is not over,” said Guardiola, whose side will host Real on March 17 in the return leg.
