A three-year-old girl and her grandmother were attacked by a pit bull during an evening walk in Markham, Illinois, on Sunday (May 3).

Speaking to ABC7 Eyewitness News, Gloria McIntosh said she stepped out of her home with her granddaughter Sunday evening. As they reached the corner, they saw the canine coming towards them. McIntosh said she believes the pit bull escaped from a home when a little kid opened the door.

"This pit bull ran up to me and he was trying to grab the baby. So I grabbed her and picked her up and put her over my head. He was jumping, trying to grab her by the legs. He scratched her arms. The dog grabbed me by the leg, bit me a couple of times. I fell to the ground. I fell to the ground and was covering her," she said.

Neighbors rushed to help them. They pulled the dog away and helped McIntosh to her feet. They then called 911.

"Police did ask the people did the dog have rabies shots and they said yeah, but I was just surprise they didn't move the dog," she said, adding that animal control too didn’t take the canine away.

"No. Because next day I had to call police and ask them, what happens if a kid is walking down the street and that dog get outs?" McIntosh said.

The Animal Care and Rabies Control told ABC7 Eyewitness News they will take further action once they received a "bite report.”

The incident comes days after an infant and the baby’s mother were attacked by a pit bull in Minnesota. Police officers responded to a home and found the eight-month-old baby and the woman in critical condition. They were rushed to a local hospital. Following investigation, officials said the dog first mauled the infant and then attacked the mother when she tried to free the baby from the canine’s jaws. The woman suffered serious injuries to her hands. Meanwhile, the canine was taken away by the Animal Care and Control. It was later euthanized. The extent of the baby’s injuries was not known.
