In her open letter, India Arie adresses the negative comments being made about Blue Ivy Carter's hair and why it's wrong for people to criticize a child. Reuters

Singer India Arie is stepping up to defend Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter from the nasty comments being made about the toddler’s hair.

Over the last few months, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have faced growing criticism about the way they choose to style their 2-year-old daughter’s hair. A Change.org petition has been launched, demanding the pair improve Blue Ivy’s hair care regimen. Even singers like Tamar Braxton and Syleena Johnson have sounded off on the topic.

In response to these potshots at Blue Ivy’s locks, India Arie has written an irate open letter.

The letter reads:

My thoughts on (Blue Ivy’s) Hair
Why does ANYone get the idea that its ok to make fun of a child?
In public no less?

This celebrity culture that hypnotizes people into thinking

a person is LITERALLY NOT REAL because you see them on television is a spell the watcher HIM or HER SELF MUST BREAK.

Blue Ivy — is a CHILD.

and ANYONE thinking to themselves right now:

“But she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth so what does it matter what I say”

Denying ANY PERSON their humanity , is a GAME we should ALL stop playing.

Because it’s the kind of PERSON YOU WANT TO BE.

Why NOT be a person who is loving towards human kind as a whole AND people as individuals?
WHY NOT be a person protects the hearts of children?

I think! all these people making negative comments would feel the SAME WAY if Blue Ivy’s hair were TOO DONE. If she had a relaxer, of Hair pulled too tight at the edges.

being gentle with a child’s hair is simply appropriate – this goes the same for ALL children.

come ya’ll Lol

Were ARE better than this.

Singer Syleena Johnson attempted to clarify the statements she made on "The Ryan Cameron Morning Show," comparing the child’s locks to those of the late rap legend Ol' Dirty Bastard. Speaking to Bossip recently, Johnson said she was only joking with the statement and called Blue Ivy “the cutest” and “most adorable baby.” She also admitted that though Blue Ivy’s hair wasn’t combed on the day the photo was taken, “a lot of our babies' hair don’t be combed.”

Neither Beyoncé nor Jay-Z has commented on the situation.
