An infant's dead body was found in the yard of a Virginia home, prompting an investigation into the matter.

Deputies from the Halifax County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call at around 6 p.m. Tuesday about an infant possibly being deceased in the yard of a residence on Hummingbird Lane, Sheriff Fred Clark said.

The child was confirmed dead by the time deputies arrived at the scene, Sheriff Clark added, as reported by WSLS 10.

"When authorities arrived, they found the infant was deceased," Sheriff Clark said in his statement, as quoted by YourGV.com.

While investigating the matter, authorities identified the deceased baby's mother, noting that she was a juvenile.

The exact age of the mother or the identities of those involved in the case were not disclosed by the authorities. The circumstances that led to the infant's death were also not immediately released.

"During the investigation, authorities were able to identify the juvenile mother of the infant and the circumstances surrounding the infant's death," the sheriff added.

Deputies were assisted by Halifax County Social Services at the scene. A cadaver dog, provided by Black Diamond Search and Rescue, also helped in the case.

Authorities sent the infant's deceased body to a medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.

The Sheriff's Office will proceed further in the matter on the basis of the complete report of the medical examiner's findings, as per ABC 13.

No charges were filed in the matter as the investigation continues.

An unrelated incident was reported earlier this week after a 2-month-old baby was found dead in an apartment in San Diego, California. Officers found the baby with traumatic injuries while responding to a welfare check request. The child was believed to be a victim of a violent domestic incident and had wounds to her upper body. The San Diego Police department arrested the child's 35-year-old mother, identified as Christine Mendoza, at the scene. She was charged with murder and booked into San Diego County jail.
