A man in India was arrested for killing his infant daughter by throwing her into a water sump after an argument with his wife.

The accused, identified as Vikram, was an alcoholic who frequently argued with his wife. On Tuesday, the man came home drunk and picked up a quarrel with his wife after accusing her of having an affair.

A while later, when the woman was not around, he picked up their 8-month-old daughter and threw her into the water sump, an underground tank popular in the country, and closed it, The Hans India reported.

The woman alerted the neighbors after failing to find the infant at home. As they were searching for the child, Vikram told one of them he had thrown the child in the water sump. The neighbors immediately opened the sump and took the infant out. They then rushed the child to a local hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. The incident took place in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad.

"Immediately, the neighbors took the infant out from the water sump and rushed her to hospital where doctors pronounced her dead. Vikram suspected that his wife was having an illegal relationship with someone and killed the baby," a police officer told local daily Telangana Today.

A police case was registered and the accused was taken into custody Tuesday night. The charges levied against the man were not known.

The incident comes months after a man from Tennessee shot his 8-month-old daughter during a heated argument with the child's mother. Kobia Lloyd and the woman got into a disagreement in the parking lot of their apartment, during which the former pulled out a handgun and shot into a vehicle with the mother and their children inside. The infant was shot in the head and rushed to a local hospital for treatment in a critical condition. The woman and two toddlers inside the vehicle were not injured. The accused, who fled the scene, was taken into custody the following day and charged with attempted murder.
