Amazon Web Service dominates the cloud business with nearly six in ten technology professionals already using its services, according to a report by RightScale and Flexera. About fifty percent of tech professionals, which include technical executives, managers, and practitioners of cloud technologies, are currently using Microsoft’s Azure. While Amazon and Microsoft dominate current usage, Google and VMWare Cloud steal the show for planned usage, with 14 and 13 percent of tech professionals planning on using each respectively.

The cloud market is attracting all types of tech giants from search engines to e-commerce behemoths. Even though only three percent of tech professionals reported using Alibaba’s cloud, earlier this month, the cloud business was the fastest-growing segment for Alibaba during Q1 2020. The company’s cloud business grew by 66 percent year-over-year, the fastest-growing segment and, in nominal terms, the cloud computing business came second to the core part of Alibaba’s business, e-commerce.

Similarly, Amazon and Microsoft have been benefiting enormously from their respective cloud businesses. Microsoft’s total commercial cloud business, which includes Office 365, Azure, and Dynamics among other services, now accounts for roughly a third of Microsoft’s revenue, standing at $44 billion as of Q4 2019, while Amazon’s cloud business makes up about 70 percent of the company’s operating profit.
