'Injustice 2' Swamp Thing
'Injustice 2' DLC rumors suggest 'Watchmen' characters could be added to the game. Its director, however, took lots of time to discuss Swamp Thing as a favorite fighter. 'Injustice 2' is available now on PS4, Xbox One and mobile. NetherRealm Studios/Warner Bros.

Injustice 2 has released to rave reviews, so game director Ed Boon recently offered some additional insight behind that success in a recent Glixel interview. Are we really getting Watchmen DLC, and who’s Ed’s favorite character? That much was discussed as part of a larger chat.

With regard to Watchmen, that rumor sprang from a poll posted by Boon in November of last year. In it, he asked his 300,000 followers if they would like to see characters from the popular DC comic in Injustice 2. As expected, the response was a resounding yes. However, Boon was quick to classify the tweet as essentially meaningless on the surface.

“I love to just get a general pulse or temperature from players about their enthusiasm for certain characters. Sometimes it's thinking about the game that we're working on, and sometimes it's for a future game and sometimes it's genuinely just me asking people, ‘What would you rather see,’” he said. “It's almost a conversation, you know. ‘What would you think about having Red Hood in the game,’ some random thing and that's what that Watchmen thing was.”

So does that mean we’ll never see Ozymandias or Nite Owl as DLC for the game? Not necessarily. After all, Boon compared the tweet to previously asking fans about Red Hood’s place on the roster. Hood, of course, will be featured as DLC in Fighter Pack 1. Might the same be true for Watchmen down the road? In true Boon fashion, it’s still a possibility.

Speaking of characters, Boon also spent lots of time talking about one of his favorite new fighters, Swamp Thing. “Swamp Thing was probably one of the characters that, as far as the team was concerned, was a must have for Injustice 2, he admitted. He further added “the fact that he has so much gear, that’s not by accident.” He described the character’s loadout as a true passion project for many members of his team.

The same attention to detail will likely be offered for the game’s seven remaining DLC fighters that are assumed to be spread across two additional Fighter Packs. Nothing’s been confirmed beyond the initial trio of Starfire, Red Hood and Sub-Zero, but fans are already getting plenty of ideas. After analyzing the full character teaser, theories have been propped up concerning Batwoman, Beast Boy and Enchantress as potential future additions.

The base roster for Injustice 2 features 29 playable characters with several different Premier Skins that essentially act as alternate identities with identical movesets. Assuming three DLC packs are eventually released, that’s a much larger final group than players saw in 2015’s Mortal Kombat X. It’s all part of a “more aggressive” post-release strategy first discussed by NetherRealm last year.
