KEY POINTS

  • Instagram is celebrating its tenth anniversary
  • The company is now letting users use the app's old icons from previous years
  • It is also making prelaunch app icons available for use

The popular social media app, Instagram, recently celebrated its 10th birthday by releasing a new feature that iOS and Android users can use -- old-school app icons. These icons hearken back to the app's earlier years, letting users see the app they've enjoyed and loved through the years.

Every Instagram user in iOS and Android devices can access the old-school icons. The thing is, the icons are hidden, tucked away inside the app. Thankfully, it's not that difficult to access them.

Those who want to use Instagram's old-school app icons can do so by following the instructions below. The steps are largely similar for iOS and Android users, although the latter requires users to do other things to make the experience look and feel better.

  • First, users should make sure that they are using the latest version of Instagram's app for iOS or Android. Those who aren't sure if they are using the latest version, as well as those who haven't updated the app in a while, can do so by going to the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
  • Second, once the app is updated, users will need to open it.
  • Third, once the app is up and running, users will need to tap on their profile icon located at the lower-right corner of the screen, tap on the menu icon (the one that looks like three horizontal lines stacked on top of each other) at the top-right corner, then tap on Settings.
  • Fourth, this is the crucial part. Instead of tapping on anything inside Settings, users will need to scroll up to look for the old-school app icons. Users will first see emojis connected to each other using dots before seeing the icons.
  • Fifth, users will eventually reach the menu where the old-school app icons can be selected for use. The menu will include a short message where Instagram thanks to its users for using the app.

Users will find a selection of app icons to choose from, including icons released from years ago as well as icons the developers used before the app was officially launched.

According to Lifehacker, Android users should note that the system will prompt them to add a new shortcut to Instagram when they use old-school app icons. Adding the new shortcut means users will find two Instagram icons on the Home Screen if they have it there. Users will need to remove the one with the new icon to enjoy the old-school feel.
