In a world where women have progressed in various fields, the gender gap has still left many women behind. On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, observed every Feb. 11, we highlight their importance in the sciences and promote equal access and empowerment.

It's no secret that women have historically struggled because of the gender gap in many fields, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) being among them. Even today, women are still said to be under-represented in STEM, according to the United Nations (UN).

For instance, women still tend to represent only 33.3% of researchers, and they still get smaller research grants, the organization noted. Female researchers' careers are also shorter and "less well-paid," and they unfortunately tend to be passed over for promotions. Only a "small minority" of women are in top-level positions, according to UNESCO.

"If these gender inequalities are so significant, it is because they are deeply rooted in our societies," UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said in the message for this year's observance. "It is because of the persistence of gender stereotypes and prejudices, which sometimes persuade girls that scientific studies are not for them, despite their tremendous potential."

But women scientists play important roles in these fields. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was implemented in hopes of promoting "full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls."

"On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let's reiterate this fundamental message: women need science, and science needs women," Azoulay said, adding, "Only by tapping into all sources of knowledge, all sources of talent, can we unlock the full potential of science, and rise to the challenges of our time."
