Less than a month after its release on Sept. 17, Apple’s iOS 12 operating system has now been installed on more than half of the Cupertino giant’s devices. The latest mobile operating system is even on track to outpace its predecessor in terms of adoption within the year of release.

Apple revealed Thursday the installation statistics of the different iOS versions on its App Store support page for developers. Based on the data presented by the company, iOS 12 is now powering 53 percent of devices that were released in the last four years. Last year’s iOS 11 accounts for 40 percent, while earlier versions of the OS are found on 7 percent of devices introduced since September 2014.

Apple also came up with a report showing the adoption of the different OS versions when all devices are considered. In this case, 50 percent of the total number is powered by iOS 12. Then 39 percent goes to iOS 11, while the remaining 11 percent accounts for earlier versions.

The statistics that Apple disclosed are in line with what analytics site Mixpanel has been monitoring. Just a week ago, Mixpanel claimed that approximately 46 percent of Apple’s devices were already running iOS 12. According to MacRumors, it’s not surprising why many users are updating their devices to iOS 12 in a fast manner. The latest software update apparently delivers speed and performance improvements to iPhones and iPads.

Given the adoption data, iOS 12 is now poised to outpace its predecessor. In early October of 2017, iOS 11 was revealed to have been installed on around 38.5 percent of devices only. It wasn’t until early November that the adoption of the 2017 mobile OS managed to hit 50 percent.

Last year’s iOS 11 reached 59 percent of installations in December. Since iOS 12 is already powering half of Apple’s devices, it’s only a matter of time when the new OS overtakes the record of the previous update, as per AppleInsider.
