KEY POINTS

  • Apple has published the iOS 13 usage rate on its developer website
  • The company also published that iPadOS adoption rate
  • The numbers show high interest in Apple's latest mobile operating systems

Apple has published the number of iPhone users who have installed iOS 13 on their handsets.

Cupertino tech giant has updated its developer support website to show the number of iPhone users who have updated to iOS 13, the latest major operating system for the handsets. The number shows a notable adoption rate across all iPhone users, including those who continue to use older models.

iOS 13 adoption

The webpage shows that according to the App Store's measurements that were gathered on June 17 – a few days before this year's Worldwide Developers Conference – a total of 92% of all iOS devices that were introduced and released within the past four years are using iOS 13, 7% continue to use iOS 12, and about 2% use an older iOS version.

The list of devices using iOS 13, based on the App Store's data, include the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (both released in 2016 – four years ago), iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, the current iPhone 11 series devices (iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max), and the 2020 iPhone SE.

The App Store also indicated that regardless of release date, a total of 81% of all devices use iOS 13, 13% use iOS 12, and about 6% use an older iOS version. Apple didn't indicate what devices these are, but it's easy to understand that based on the phrase “all devices,” this could include the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, as well as the older iPhone SE.

iPadOS 13 adoption

Apple also revealed the number of iPads that are using iPadOS 13, the latest major iPad operating system. A total of 93% of all devices introduced or released within the past four years are using iPadOS 13, the App Store noted. About 5% of all devices introduced in the same period are using iOS 12, and about 1% are using an older iOS version.

The App Store also indicated that regardless of release date, 73% of all devices that are currently in use run on iPadOS 13, 16% are running on iOS 12, and 11% are running on older iOS versions. The last statistic is pretty interesting, and could mean that those who use older iPads are opting not to update to a newer iOS or iPadOS version.
