“Jane the Virgin” has always been an upbeat show, with its main characters always looking at the brighter side of things no matter how difficult things might get. But this Season 3, fans might be shocked when the show takes a more upsetting and emotional turn.

Gina Rodriguez’s character, Jane Gloriana Villanueva, is a newly-married woman dealing with her husband Michael Cordero’s (Brett Dier) coma. Rodriguez told Entertainment Weekly that she filmed a lot of heavy scenes for next season that will really tug at the heartstrings, and it took an effort for her to maintain her positive aura in real life.

“You learn to replace your energy in some other thought than the one in the scene,” Rodriguez explained. “You see her in the lowest of lows. It’s very heavy.”

As for showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, she said that the main characters will be thrust in situations that will really make them more mature. “This year’s theme is about growing up in a real, deeper way,” she said. “All of our characters are taking major steps forward.”

One person who will be forced to grow up is Jane’s mother Xo (Andrea Navedo), who got pregnant last season. TV Guide even revealed that pregnancy isn’t going to be Xo’s only focus next season, since she will land a very important audition for the popular singing competition “The Voice.”

Xo has always dreamed of becoming a famed singer, and the show might help her fulfill her goal.

With so many exciting things to look forward to next season, Justin Baldoni, who plays hotelier Rafael Solano, told the Huffington Post that fans better buckle their seatbelts because it’s going to be one exhilarating ride.

“All I can tell you is that it’s going to be crazy! Season three is going to be crazier than season two, which was crazier than season one...so get ready!” he said.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 will premiere on Monday, Oct. 17, at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
