Jane the Virgin
The CW's “Jane the Virgin” has just been renewed for a fourth season. The CW

Jane Gloriana Villanueva’s (Gina Rodriguez) grandmother, Alba (Ivonne Col), from “Jane the Virgin” has a history as rich as Jane’s current situation, and in Season 3, fans will be meeting some members of Jane’s extended family.

”You’re going to be meeting people from Alba’s family in Venezuela,” Urman told Entertainment Weekly. “I think that will [bring] interesting characters into our world.”

They might bring in some comedy to the show to offset the grim reality of Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) fighting for his life in the hospital. “I really feel the balance of our show works best when it has all of these different elements,” said Urman. “As long as we have a lot of those elements going on, which is the trick of the show, it can hopefully speak to and affect a lot of different kinds of people.”

As for Michael’s status, Urman said they are not going to make light of the matter, but treat it with the respect it deserves. “Jane ended last season in a really fraught way, and we’re not taking that lightly as we go in – but as always, it’s making sure you can do that but make it be a comedy,” she assured.

Another issue they want to tackle with respect is Jane’s mother Xo’s (Andrea Navedo) pregnancy. “We always knew that we wanted Xo to not want to have a baby and then we were trying to figure out how we were going to be ending her story,” Urman told The Hollywood Reporter. “If she got pregnant with Rogelio's nemesis, it would be very shocking to her and to the audience and also she doesn't want to have a baby so that's definitely going to be something that we dive into.”

Urman also told TV Line that Rogelio will have little say on whether or not Xo will keep the baby. “He’s not going to be too thrilled. Of course, it’s not his decision to make one way or another,” she said.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 will premiere on Monday, Oct. 17, at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
