It was a lot of fun watching Petra Solano (Yael Grobglas) flirting with her lawyer, Jane Ramos (Rosario Dawson) this Season 4 of “Jane the Virgin.”

Their sexual tension is undeniable, and Petra’s dream-slash-fantasy involving Jane is proof of that. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told Mic that having Petra fall for a woman is not something she planned from the get-go, but after they thought about it, things just started making sense.

“She’s a character that’s so, so much in control and is so used to wrapping men around her finger. We wanted to see what would happen if she were equally matched by somebody who was also strong and unafraid, and what would surprise Petra,” said Urman.

The showrunner added that they’re proud to have characters who are “out and proud,” so they wanted to showcase much more of their stories as possible. In Petra’s case, they cannot wait to see her romantic feelings evolve.

“There’s definitely an interesting and emotional, evocative story of someone who’s thought that they have their sexuality figured out and then comes to realize that they had been thinking about their sexuality one way and then suddenly they’re having these feelings,” she said.

Before Petra started developing an interest in Jane, the show tackled sexuality with Adam Alvaro (Tyler Posey), the other Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) boyfriend after her husband, Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) passed away.

Before Adam and Jane got together, he was dating other guys. It was a huge shock for Jane, who considered herself as someone “very progressive.” But she had an issue with him being bisexual.

“Jane would think she’d have no issue with it — that would be the place she wants to come into the story with, but then she has to unpack a lot of stuff,” Urman told Variety. “Some of it is residual [because] she grew up in a very religious house and has certain ideas in her head that are based in telenovelas and based on romance writing. And she had to struggle with her own discomfort and get over it.”

Right now, Jane has rekindled her relationship with her baby daddy, Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni). They’re keeping their romance a secret from their family and friends, but it is only a matter of time before they are found out.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 4 airs Fridays on The CW at 9 p.m. EST.
