Johnny Depp is a "hopeless addict," claimed The Sun's lawyer in her closing argument during the actor’s libel case hearing against the tabloid on Monday.

Depp sued The Sun for calling him a "wife beater" in one article following Amber Heard's claim that he was violent and abusive. His libel case against the tabloid is due to end on Tuesday and attorney Sasha Wass, who is representing The Sun, said that Depp is guilty of Heard's allegations and the outlet wasn’t at fault in calling him a "wife beater."

"There is no doubt that Mr. Depp regularly and systematically abused his wife. The characterization that he is a wife beater is entirely truthful," Wass said in her closing argument as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

She added that Depp was a "hopeless addict who repeatedly lost his self-control and all ability to restrain his anger."

"Permeating all of the evidence in this case is the character of Mr. Depp himself — his well-documented evidence of violence and destruction over his adult life which have occurred when he was under the influence of drink and drugs," she continued.

She summarized her defense by saying that there was a "a deep misogyny … lay at the root of Mr. Depp's anger."

"He created a misogynistic persona of [Heard] as the stereotype of a nagging woman," she added.

Wass also said that Depp branded Heard as "a gold-digger, a shrew and an adulterer" to discredit her. She also said that the then-couple were driven apart by "a clash of cultures and a clash of generations.”

Meanwhile, during the trial, several came forward to defend Depp. According to Stephen Deuters, who worked as Depp's personal assistant for 16 years, Heard was the real abuser between the two. He said he was outraged after learning how Heard behaved when the issue hit the press.

“I knew that Ms. Heard was the abuser in the relationship and I was appalled that she would behave in this way,” Deuters said.

“At no point did Ms. Heard ever mention any physical abuse and I never saw evidence of any injury to Ms. Heard. In contrast, Mr. Depp told me on multiple occasions that Ms. Heard had attacked him or abused him physically and verbally.”

Depp's former security guard Rick Wood also sided with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star. According to him, Heard only made up the big drama "all for show."
