  • Clooney said they never dated because they were always in a relationship with other people
  • The actor shared that he doesn't think dating each other "was ever really a thing" between them

Julia Roberts and George Clooney have revealed the reason why their relationship never turned romantic during their over two-decade friendship.

Roberts, 54, and Clooney, 61, sat down for an interview with "Access Hollywood" Wednesday to promote their upcoming romantic-comedy movie, "Ticket to Paradise."

Host Kit Hoover hit the two celebrities with rapid-fire questions about their longtime bond, including their first impressions of one another and what they admire most about each other.

Clooney shared that Roberts "made me laugh" during their first meeting, while the "Pretty Woman" actress said her first impression of her co-star was "gentle."

As for the qualities they admire most about one another, Clooney praised Roberts for her "kindness." The actress, for her part, said she was amazed by his "fortitude."

Hoover went on to ask them, "Did you ever have a no-dating policy back in the day... Years and years ago before you were ever in a relationship?"

"To not date each other? I don't think we needed to state it!" Roberts replied.

Clooney provided more context as to why they have always been platonic and never took things to "a different level."

"Julia was always in a relationship, or I was in a relationship. And we were fast friends right away. So it was nothing, but it's been nothing but fun for us. So, I don't think that was ever really a thing," Clooney said.

In a previous interview with E! News, Roberts shared the secret to her successful marriage to her husband, Danny Moder. The couple has been married for 20 years and shares 17-year-old twins Hazel and Phinnaeus and 15-year-old son Henry.

"I always say that same thing and I'm sticking with it," she told the outlet before adding, "It's making out. Lots of making out."

"I make out with Danny, too," Clooney jokingly chimed in, to which the "Eat Pray Love" actress replied, "It keeps you guys together."

Meanwhile, Clooney joked that he's "not allowed to give advice to anyone" because he "started so late" in finding his happily ever after. He is now married to human rights attorney Amal Clooney.

He was 53 and she was 44 when they tied the knot in 2014. They have since welcomed twins Alexander and Ella, now 5

"I just kind of have to look at it as I'm the luckiest human being and then just appreciate that," Clooney told E! News.

"Ticket to Paradise" will hit theaters on Oct. 21.
