  • Amber Heard took the stand Wednesday to speak for the first time on day 14 of Johnny Depp's defamation trial against her
  • Heard was accused of taking lines verbatim from the movie "The Talented Mr. Ripley" for her testimony
  • Multiple media outlets, including the Associated Press, said these claims were "false"

A claim that Amber Heard borrowed lines from films for her testimony in Johnny Depp's defamation trial against her has been debunked.

After Heard took the stand Wednesday to speak for the first time on day 14 of the trial in Fairfax, Virginia, rumors spread on social media that the actress took lines verbatim from the 1999 movie "The Talented Mr. Ripley," Page Six reported.

However, the Associated Press concluded that this claim was false and that Heard "did not make comments that match a specific quote from the movie that was attributed to her online" following a review of footage from Wednesday's proceedings.

The rumors began after some Twitter, Instagram and Facebook users shared what they alleged were side-by-side quotes showing Heard’s statements and nearly identical phrases from the Anthony Minghella-directed psychological thriller, which follows millionaire playboy Dickie Greenleaf (played by Jude Law), his girlfriend Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow) and charismatic manipulator Tom Ripley (Matt Damon).

"The thing with Dickie... it’s like the sun shines on you, and it’s glorious. And then he forgets you and it’s very, very cold... When you have his attention, you feel like you’re the only person in the world, that’s why everybody loves him so much," Paltrow's character said in the film.

According to the unverified social media posts, Heard had said: "When I was around Johnny, I felt like the most beautiful person in the world."

"You know, made me feel seen, made me feel… like a million dollars. It felt like a dream. It felt like, um, absolute magic and then he would disappear. And there would be just no way to get ahold of him, no way to contact him," the "Aquaman" star allegedly said.

The posts sparked debate on social media over whether or not Heard plagiarized lines from the film.

"Remember the movie 'The Talented Mr. Ripley'? Well yesterday, Amber Heard got on the witness stand & repeated these lines word for f------ word!" claimed one Twitter user, sharing an image of the quote juxtaposed with supposed statements from Heard.

"She actually copied her testimony from a lot more films. It's on YouTube. She's copying a Julia Roberts film and a few others. When she said that Johnny said he'd rather cut off his hand, that was from a movie too," another claimed.

A separate Twitter user disagreed, commenting, "These are two completely different quotes?"

"You do realize that literally anyone who has been in a relationship like hers has likely described their partner in a similar way, right?" another chimed in.

But AP said no video or news article showed Heard delivering the film quote verbatim.

Casey Decker of Verify also concluded that the claims that Heard borrowed lines from "The Talented Mr. Ripley" are "false."

"We went through the entire transcript of Heard's testimony and she simply never said this," Decker said, referring to the quote from Paltrow's character. "She did say something similar in sentiment, but it's not taken from the movie."

Jennifer Garner used a similar quote in 2016 to describe ex-husband Ben Affleck during an interview, podcaster NotSkinnyButNotFat said on Instagram.

"I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow," Garner told Vanity Fair.

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she wrote about surviving domestic abuse. Though Depp was not named in the article, he claimed it cost him movie projects.

Heard and Depp accused each other of acts of physical violence during their relationship. They have both denied the other's claims.

Following Heard's testimony Thursday, a spokesperson for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor said in a statement to People: "As Mr. Depp's counsel correctly predicted in their opening statements last month, Ms. Heard did indeed deliver 'the performance of her life' in her direct examination."

A spokesperson for Heard responded, saying in part, "As evidenced by the statement just released, Mr. Depp’s defamation claim is falling apart so rapidly that his counsel are turning from prosecutor to persecutor."
