  • Julianne Hough filed for divorce from husband Brooks Laich in Los Angeles Monday
  • Hough's "heart" was no longer in the marriage despite initially feeling "torn" over their split, a report says
  • The two tied the knot in 2017 and announced their separation in May this year

Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich sparked reconciliation rumors a few months back, but the two are now officially ending their nearly three-year marriage.

After announcing their split five months ago, Hough, 32, and Laich, 37, remained amicable and fans continued to hope that they would eventually get back together. But the "Dancing with the Stars" judge is making their split official after filing for divorce from her former NHL player beau in Los Angeles Monday, Entertainment Tonight reported.

"It was Julianne who initiated their split, but she was really struggling with it and felt torn," an unnamed source told E! News.

The 32-year-old star is "still having a hard time" with her decision but "ultimately decided her heart wasn't in the marriage anymore and wanted to give herself the freedom and independence to experience new things," a second source said.

In August, several reports claimed that Hough and Laich were considering getting back together and were trying to make their marriage work.

"Brooks really still wants to make it work and she's considering it but taking her time. He's open to whatever it will take," an unnamed source told People, adding that Hough still had feelings for Laich.

"Julianne likes the idea of freedom but doesn't want to lose such a good, solid guy," the insider continued. "Everyone who knows him knows how grounded and great he is. Her friends and family don't want her to lose someone like that."

Laich was open to getting back together with Hough as well, the source added. Her family and friends reportedly also encouraged reconciliation between the two and hoped that she would give the former ice hockey player another chance.

In September, it was reported that they were "almost fully reconciled" and ready for a fresh start. Hough and Laich quarantined separately amid the pandemic, with the dancer staying home in Los Angeles and her estranged husband traveling to their place in Idaho.

An anonymous insider, however, told E! News that the pandemic helped Hough realize that she misses Laich and that she may have moved on too quickly and failed to appreciate what she and her estranged husband had together. But with news of the divorce filing, it seems reconciliation is no longer in the cards for the two.

Hough and Laich tied the knot in summer 2017 in an outdoor wedding on Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They had been together since 2013 prior to announcing their split in May.
