KEY POINTS

  • Luka Jovic has been a part of Real Madrid since 2019
  • He has managed only 2 goals for Los Blancos
  • Klopp has been a long-term admirer of Jovic

Jurgen Klopp has reportedly made a personal request to the Liverpool FC board to sign Real Madrid’s flop forward Luka Jovic.

Klopp has been a long-term admirer of the 23-year-old Jovic, who is believed to fit perfectly in the role Liverpool are looking for, reported Spanish publication Fichajes.

The Reds, who already boast the likes of Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in their attack, will have to battle Premier League rivals Arsenal in the race to sign Real Madrid’s Jovic, according to media outlet Liverpool.com.

Jovic moved from German club Eintracht Frankfurt to Real Madrid at a transfer fee of $68 million in the summer of 2019.

The young Serbia national joined Real Madrid on the back of 27 goals and seven assists in 48 competitive matches but has only struggled in the Spanish capital, scoring only two goals and three assists in as many as 38 matches, across all competitions, for the Spanish club.

After falling behind in-form Karim Benzema in the pecking order, Jovic was loaned off back to Frankfurt during the 2021 January window until the end of the 2020–21 season. In 18 matches, Jovic scored four goals for the Bundesliga club before returning to Madrid ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

Liverpool made just one signing during the 2021 summer window, where they landed RB Leipzig center-back Ibrahima Konate at $49 million. Ahead of the winter window, Klopp wants to sign Real Madrid forward Jovic, who is also being linked with Arsenal.

Liverpool may have to battle against Arsenal in the race to sign Jovic as the Emirates side is also the Serbia national’s situation at Real Madrid. Arsenal are looking at Jovic as a long-term replacement for Alexandre Lacazette, whose current deal is due to end in 2022, according to Daily Mail.

Meanwhile, Klopp has also asked Liverpool to approach Leicester City over a possible transfer for winger Harvey Barnes in January. "Barnes is probably one of the biggest talents. I’m not sure if he is respected or appreciated as much as he should be, he is an unbelievable player, to be honest, a proper Leicester product," Klopp said in a recent interview with Liverpool.com.
