A kangaroo's body has been found decapitated on the oval of an Australian school.

A maintenance staff member made the grim discovery at Coombabah State High School on the Gold Coast, Queensland, last week, as students returned to school from a break. No sign of blood or the animal's head was found nearby, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

An investigation has been launched, and the case has been referred to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

"Unfortunately, we do see animal cruelty happening to wildlife every now and then," RSPCA Queensland's Emma Lagoon told 7News.

Wildlife specialists believe that the kangaroo's decapitation by another animal is unlikely.

"It was concluded that the injuries — a clean cut and no sign of the head nearby — indicated human and not animal predators such as a fox or wild dog," Wildlife Queensland Gold Coast leader Sally Spain said, as per the Gold Coast Bulletin.

The school is a well-known habitat for kangaroos. The campus is close to a large native wildlife population that can be found in the surrounding Coombabah Lakelands Area, where kangaroos frequently spend time relaxing on the school's backfield.

"It's just a really terrible act and we hope somebody can come forward and help us find out what happened," 7News quoted Lagoon as saying.

A call for information has also been made by the animal welfare body, which reportedly has the power to prosecute cases of animal cruelty in Queensland.

"The outrage felt at the school and within the local community means that every effort is being made to track down those who would deliberately terrify and kill one of the Aussie local wildlife inhabitants of the neighborhood," Spain said further, according to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

A dramatic video of a man getting into a wild fight against a kangaroo and bodyslamming the animal took the internet by storm in May.

The man, identified as Cliff Des, said he was at his home in the Australian town of Ballina when he saw the 6-foot animal charging at his dog in his front yard. He tried to drive the kangaroo away, but instead of leaving, the animal targeted him.

A fight then ensued, and it went on until he was able to use his body weight to slam the marsupial to the ground. It wasn't immediately known if the man or the kangaroo got injured during the fight.
