KEY POINTS

  • The Kansas City Chiefs opened their NFL season with a 34-20 win against the Houston Texans
  • Patrick Mahomes threw for 211 yards that led to three touchdowns
  • Rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a big debut of 138 rush yards

The Kansas City Chiefs were victorious in their opening match against the Houston Texans. A big part of their win was how rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire was sensational in his NFL debut.

The defending champions are coming off a strong campaign last season where the sensational Patrick Mahomes led the quad. The reigning NFL Super Bowl MVP was in top form once again as he managed to throw for 211 yards that led to three touchdowns. While Deshaun Watson tallied 253 yards, it wasn’t enough to overtake the Chiefs’ offensive attack.

One of the key points in the 34-20 win of the Chiefs was how Edwards-Helaire led the team’s rushing. Tallying 138 yards for the squad, players such as Mahomes praised their young player.

"He’s just another weapon I have in this offense," Mahomes said by way of ESPN.

It was also an overall effort from Andy Reid’s squad as they were able to show in front of their home crowd that they’re still an elite team.

"We just trust whatever Coach Reid is dialing up," said Travis Kelce.

The tight end had six catches good for 50 yards and a touchdown.

"They do an unbelievable job preparing us and scheming up defenses and we just trust what they're doing," Kelce added.

It has been a unique year for sports fans considering the effects of the global pandemic. Despite the difficult situation, the Chiefs are looking to continue where they left off last year and play as well as they can. Led by Mahomes, the Chiefs are anticipating to keep up the pace considering the talent that they have in their roster.

"Obviously, our players, both sides of the ball and special teams, I thought they were solid," Reid said.

It was a huge 17-0 second quarter for the Chiefs that gave the team enough momentum to break away with the victory.

"For the first game, there were some good things that were done, some great individual performances," Reid continued.

The game was played in front of fans where they were able to make an impact for the chiefs despite the unprecedented times. It will be interesting to see how the Chiefs continue for the rest of the season. With young guys such as Edwards-Helaire performing well, Mahomes will be tested if he can lead his team and defend their NFL title.
