An 8-year-old boy in India was in a critical condition after two unidentified men kidnapped him, chopped off his genitals and dumped him in a field.

The horrific incident took place Saturday. The unidentified boy was playing near his house in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh when two bike-borne men abducted him, Times Now reported.

The boy was later found with his genitals chopped off in a cane field. Passers-by saw the boy and rushed him to a nearby health facility for treatment. Later, as his condition deteriorated, he was moved to the district hospital.

The boy, who is the son of a farmer, remains in a critical condition as of Monday. The police have filed a case against the unidentified suspects and have charged them under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by means of an instrument) of the Indian Penal Code. An investigation has been launched and the police are trying to locate the perpetrators.

“The boy’s uncle was working in a cane field near the crime scene when the accused men took the minor boy forcibly with them. We are investigating the case from all angles… The boy is receiving medical treatment and so we need to wait for some time to record his statement,” the Times of India quoted a police officer as saying.

Last week, a 13-year-old boy in Uttar Pradesh was sexually assaulted by two minors. Authorities said the boy’s father had sent him to a local market to buy some agricultural equipment. The two accused, who were both local residents, accompanied the boy. On the way to the market, the two accused lured the boy into a jungle and sexually assaulted him. They later threatened him not to disclose the incident to anyone. After the boy reached home, his family learned of the alleged sexual assault, and filed a police complaint. A case was registered against the two juveniles under IPC Section 377 (unnatural sex). An investigation is underway into the incident, Times Now reported at the time.
