  • Kim Kardashian fought with Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia when asked to wear a bodysuit for the Met Gala
  • The "KUWTK" star was told it was a costume gala and not a vanity fair party where everyone should look beautiful
  • Gvasalia said the costume had a concept, and it showed Kardashian's popularity because people knew it was her without seeing her face

Kim Kardashian got candid about her controversial and show-stopping 2021 Met Gala look.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star will grace Vogue's cover for its March issue. During the interview with the magazine, she talked about fashion, family and taking control of her wardrobe choices.

Kardashian, 41, shared that she was initially against wearing a Balenciaga body stocking all over her body and even her face when she attended the 2021 Met Gala. Her outfit received mixed responses from the public, with some saying it was odd and others calling it a Halloween costume.

"I fought against it. I was like, I don't know how I could wear the mask. Why would I want to cover my face?" Kardashian told Vogue. "But Demna [Gvasalia, Creative Director at Balenciaga] and the team were like, 'This is a costume gala. This is not a Vanity Fair party where everyone looks beautiful. There's a theme and you have to wear the mask. That is the look.'"

While wearing masks was fitting due to the pandemic, Demna, also the co-founder of the label Vetements, had something in mind when he designed the costume for Kardashian. It was a concept that spoke about how popular Kardashian is.

"People would know instantly it was Kim because of her silhouette. They wouldn't even need to see her face, you know? And I think that's the whole power of her celebrity, that people wouldn't need to see her face to know it's her," he said.

While some found Kardashian's 2021 Met Gala look bizarre, several also got Demna's point. Kardashian even shared an article from Vogue on her Instagram Story, discussing how the reality star "rewrote the red carpet's rules."

"Completely obscuring her features and famous physique, the look gave the reality star something she hasn't had in a long while: anonymity," senior fashion and culture editor Janelle Okwodu wrote.

She also shared a tweet approving of her costume after many questioned how her outfit followed the theme.

"For someone who is always criticized for being overly sexual, Kim showed she can cover every square inch of skin and still find a way to be criticized and ridiculed. THAT is American culture," the tweet read.

Meanwhile, American actor Leslie Jordan joked about the issue by recreating the unique look and asked fans, "Who wore it better?" The 66-year-old celebrity recreated the look using clean underwear, which he equated to "fashion brilliance."
