Klay Thompson is one of two key Golden State Warriors players – the other being Kevin Durant – who will become unrestricted free agents next summer, but the duo’s plans for the future are currently poles apart.

Thompson has continually insisted that he wants to remain a Warrior for the foreseeable future and is likely to sign a new deal with the reigning champions. He has formed a strong bond with Stephen Curry since being drafted by the Bay Area team in 2011.

There will be no shortage of suitors for one of the best shooters in the NBA if he decides to leave in the summer, but according to his father Mychal Thompson, that is unlikely to happen.

He believes there is very little that can change Thompson’s mind and as long as the Warriors hierarchy and the fans show that they want him, his son will sign a new deal with the back-to-back NBA champions.

"No, I don't see it," Klay's father, Mychal, said Thursday night on KNBR 680, as quoted on NBC Sports. "As long as Joe Lacob and Peter Guber and the Warriors organization wants him there -- and the coaching staff and the fan base -- as long as he's wanted, there's no reason to leave.”

Durant, on the other hand, has not said anything about his future plans which has led to rampant speculation about whether he will stay or go. There are many who feel this is his last season with the Warriors as he is keen to lead his own team and not be part of Curry’s bandwagon.

However, many others believe he will commit his long-term future to the Warriors, especially since he will become eligible to sign a five-year max contract worth $221 million with the Warriors in 2019.

When asked if Durant’s future will have any impact on Thompson, the shooting guard’s father indicated that the entire team will remain as is in 2019 with no one expected to leave. Thompson Sr. also advised the team owners to keep the team together and ensure the current starting roster retire as Warriors.

"Listen. They're all gonna stay. Ain't nobody going nowhere, man," Thompson’s father explained. "They got something special and unique up there. There's no reason to break that up.”

“Those guys are special. And if they listen to me -- if they keep them together for another five or seven or eight years -- let 'em all retire as Warriors. That's what my advice would be,” he added.

The Warriors are currently second in the Western Conference just behind the Denver Nuggets, despite that Steve Kerr’s side are the overwhelming favorites to win a third straight NBA title in 2019.
