KEY POINTS

  • The Lakers have no plans in trading LeBron James even if the All-Star doesn’t ink an extension
  • James remains a force to reckon with in the NBA despite his age
  • The Lakers will have to find a new head coach for their campaign next season

Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James’ contract with the Los Angeles Lakers is running out, and there remains no word if the 37-year-old cager will sign a new deal with the franchise.

There are several things to consider at the end of James.

One is that he is at that point where other NBA players would call it a career.

But as most may have seen, “The King” continues to play at a high level as he shows no signs of slowing down.

However, another point to consider is that James may be frustrated at how things have gone with the Lakers.

After winning the NBA title in the COVID-19-riddled season, the Lakers have failed to make big strides in the past two NBA playoffs.

This was despite the Lakers taking in big names the last two seasons, the last of which was Russell Westbrook.

The 2017 NBA MVP failed to factor in with the Lakers this season, one of the reasons that led to the team's exit in the regular season.

The future of James with the Lakers is uncertain, especially once his contract expires.

A deal extension could be dangled by August although there is no assurance he will agree to it.

Should the 18-time All-Star opt not to sign, it gives the Lakers reason to trade him for someone else.

However, sources tell Sam Amick of The Athletic that Lakers owner Jeanie Buss does not intend to trade the four-time NBA champion even if he does not sign a new pact with the ballclub.

One possible reason pointed out by NBC Sports is that having James and Anthony Davis means the Lakers are still formidable contenders.

The only thing that management needs to do is choose wisely and bring in talent that can help the All-Star duo.

Everything may be quiet now on the Lakers’ front after their disastrous 2021-22 NBA season.

Courtside tactician Frank Vogel is no longer around, and the search for a new head coach is on.

Ex-Lakers coach Phil Jackson is reportedly helping out in the coaching search, a move that has drawn mixed reactions per a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Regardless, the Lakers' plans for next season may only get rolling once a new head coach is officially named.
