Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has become the highest-scoring National Basketball Association player in history while amassing a net worth of more than $1 billion.

The 38-year-old had a total of 38,388 points from regular season matches by the end of his team's Tuesday match against the Oklahoma City Thunder, edging out retired NBA player and fellow basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar by a single point.

"King James" has prepared for this feat since high school, NBC Sports reported.

Abdul-Jabbar, 75, watched from the courtside as he was surpassed as the highest-scoring NBA player, clapping when James scored throughout the game.

Other witnesses included Lakers controlling owner Jeanie Buss, former team point guard Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr., and Nike founder Phil Knight, among others, according to a report by USA Today.

In addition to becoming the leading scorer in the NBA's history, James is the only player to hold the highest per-game scoring average for three different franchises, the Lakers and his two past teams, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat, CBS Sports reported.

He was also the first active NBA player to become a billionaire and is the second highest-paid athlete in the world, only behind Argentine soccer giant Lionel Messi.

James, a four-time NBA champion, has earned around $1.28 billion as of Wednesday, according to his Forbes profile.

This amount can be broken down into the $385 million in pretax salary that James received from playing with the Lakers, Cavaliers and Heat, as well as the more than $900 million worth of pretax earnings he gained off the court from business ventures and endorsement deals with the likes of PepsiCo, Walmart and his lifetime sponsor, Nike.

Key to "King James'" billionaire status was his decision to take equity in brands he works with, including audio products manufacturer Beats by Dr. Dre and the Blaze Pizza chain, the latter of which became the fastest-growing restaurant chain in American food service business history in the four years it expanded from two to 200 franchises.

James also owns stakes in pro baseball, soccer and hockey teams, and he dreams of owning an NBA team one day.

Aside from playing basketball and investing in businesses, James also participates in activism through his charity, the LeBron James Family Foundation.

The nonprofit opened its first school in 2018 and pledged to spend more than $40 million to send kids to college.
