Zari wants to go back in time to prevent her brother’s death in Season 3 of CW’s “Legends of Tomorrow.”

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that Zari (Tala Ashe) joins the Legends because she thinks she can use their help to bring her brother back from the dead.

“When we meet Zari, her brother will have been killed and the rest of her family is presumed missing,” Guggenheim said. “However, when she joins the Legends, she is surprised to learn that their rules prevent her from using time travel to save her brother. A computer hacker by training, Zari then sets out to see if she can find a loophole to these rules and, essentially, hack time.”

As previously reported, Zari is from the future where fear, prejudice and lack of care for the planet remain rampant. While the Legends will apparently allow her to join their adventure, Zari will butt heads with his new group as she believes that their objective of just fixing anachronisms and aberrations isn’t really that helpful to humankind.

“The Legends meet Zari in 2042, and 2042 is a pretty bleak dystopian police state,” Ashe said (via Entertainment Weekly) at Television Critics Association’s summer press tour last August. “She encounters the Legends and there’s a philosophical challenge there, because she sees they’re going to fix these anachronisms in history, but she’s living in a time that’s so bleak and terrible, so she challenges the Legends … to improve history and not just fix history. So there will be some tension there.”

That tension will be most apparent between Zari and Ray (Brandon Routh). During a roundtable interview at this year’s Comic-Con, Routh said that Ray and Zari won’t get along immediately when they meet each other in the new season. “They’re going to not see eye-to-eye. That’s definitely going to be their dynamic for a while,” Routh said (via Hidden Remote) about Ray and Zari’s relationship, before pointing out that the pair’s different views about life and how technology can affect change put a wall between them.

“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
