Although Rip now has the Time Bureau as his new crew, viewers have not seen the last of him working side by side with the Legends.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Legends of Tomorrow” star Arthur Darvill revealed that his character, Rip, reaches out to his old crew for assistance when he starts to uncover the underlying mystery running through Season 3 of the CW series.

“There’s a thing that he discovers, which is very important to him and he feels like, at times, he can sort out on his own, and then also realizes he needs to call on the Legends in order to help him,” Darvill said. “The Time Bureau, as much as they’re brilliant, they do things in too much of an official way in order for, in his opinion, things to actually get done. So his interaction with the Legends, at the moment, is very much as a means to an end for him in terms of what he’s trying to achieve.”

While Rip’s ultimate mission in Season 3 is being kept under wraps, executive producer Phil Klemmer shared one reason why they decided to have Rip leave the Legends at the end of the Season 2 finale only to bring him back as the leader of Time Bureau in the new season.

“I think our Legends were best when they’re the underdogs, the bad new bearers,” Klemmer said in a featurette teasing Season 3. “At the end of every season, when the world doesn’t end, it means they succeeded in one sense. So our challenge is how do [we] take their success and turn it into a humiliation. Obviously, our Legends are total screw-ups, but it really helps to have confident people [like Rip and the Time Bureau] around to just provide that sort of comic foil for [our] guys.”

“That gave us the idea for ‘What if Rip went back in time [and] started the new Time Bureau?’” the exec producer continued. “[So] Rip come[s] back as basically the new boss, the new police chief, [asking the Legends], ‘What are you guys doing?’”

While Darvill can’t say too much about Season 3, the British actor assured fans that the new season is going to be “very exciting.” “I’m very happy with what we’ve come up with,” Darvill told Digital Spy. “They’re very good at keeping us involved in how our stories pan out, so I’m really excited to see where it goes in the future. I think there’ll be a few surprises in store for people!”

“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
