Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter

“Legends of Tomorrow” fans haven’t seen the last of Arthur Darvill’s Rip Hunter yet.

At the end of Season 2 finale of “Legends of Tomorrow,” Rip left the Waverider with the belief that the team has functioned far better in his absence than it ever did under his leadership. In his touching parting scene with Sara (Caity Lotz), Rip said that he decided to depart from the group because he has realized that there’s nothing more for him to teach everyone.

While that scene could have easily wrapped up Rip’s storyline on the series, executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently revealed that Rip’s journey doesn’t end there.

“We’ve got plans for Rip for next year,” Guggenheim said during an interview on SiriusXM radio show “Superhero Insider.” “It’s just in a different capacity than him being a member of the team.”

Although Rip is no longer part of the show’s core team in Season 3, the group isn’t going to be short of members. “Legends of Tomorrow” executive producer Phil Klemmer told Rotten Tomatoes at PaleyFest last month that there are new characters who will board the Waverider next season. And Guggenheim revealed that one of those new recruits is a pre-existing DC character.

“We’re drawing on an established character who is not from the comics,” Guggenheim teased. “Let me be very clear: not original to the show but not from the comics and not from any of the other DC Arrowverse shows.”

During his interview on “Superhero Insider,” Guggenheim also revealed that they have talked about introducing DC character Kamandi, a.k.a. The Last Boy on Earth, to the show next season.

“We have talked about Kamandi in the writers’ room,” Guggenheim said. “He’s definitely a character that we love and a concept that we love. Certainly, we’ve opened the door for that kind of story. I can’t say that we’re absolutely committed to doing Kamandi next year, it’s just totally on the table and certainly something we’ve been talking about.”
