A leopard that strayed into a residential area in India was reportedly tranquilized after it attacked a woman and triggered panic among the locals.

The big cat was tranquilized by the forest department officials Tuesday in the city of Guwahati in the northeastern state of Assam. The leopard had ventured into the area from the nearby hills, and attacked the 50-year-old woman, India Today reported.

The woman, identified as Anju Bhattacharya, had sustained injuries and was admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.

After injuring the woman, the leopard was found resting on a jackfruit tree on a housing campus. The Assam Forest Department officials were alerted about the sighting, following which they responded to the area.

After locating the wild cat, the officials tranquilized the animal and took it to the Assam State Zoo for treatment, media outlet India.com reported.

The Assam Forest Department had shared a video on Twitter showing the rescue of the leopard. The video showed the tranquilized leopard being held by a man on a tree, while another person was seen spreading out a net underneath to capture the big animal.

A follow-up video shared by the Assam Forest Department showed the wild cat falling into the net and being captured. Meanwhile, locals had gathered at the spot to watch the rescue operation being carried out.

"A leopard that had strayed into the Loco Colony of Pandu, Guwahati has been successfully rescued," the tweet read.

In December 2021, a leopard had strayed into a school in India and attacked a student in an empty classroom. The incident took place in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The student was attacked when he entered the classroom without realizing the animal was inside. The unidentified student sustained scratch and bite marks on his arms and back due to the attack. The leopard was then locked inside the classroom following the attack. The sighting triggered huge panic on the campus. The leopard was caught on camera, loitering inside the empty classroom, and the video has since gone viral on social media.
