Panic gripped a village in the southern Indian state of Karnataka after a leopard entered a home and took a pet dog Friday night.

CCTV footage of the incident shows the leopard entering the property by leaping over a compound wall. The animal is then seen roaming inside the property for a minute before grabbing the canine by its neck and running away by climbing over the same wall.

Recalling the incident, Raghunath, the owner of the canine, said, "We have two dachshunds that were outside the house. When I woke up in the morning, I found one of the dogs missing. After searching in the nearby areas, I checked the CCTV footage and saw a leopard sitting on the compound wall and later returning with one of the dogs that was inside the compound.”

Hoping that the big cat is rescued soon, he added, “We have alerted the forest department. A neighbor informed us that they spotted the leopard near the cattle shed located, the next day. It escaped when they switched on the lights. We hope the forest department acts and rescues the leopard at the earliest.”

Meanwhile, the forest officials have asked the villagers to not venture outside in the evenings and have also asked the guards to keep a watch. The leopard remained at large as of Sunday evening.

The incident comes less than a month after a pet dog fought off a leopard after the big cat attacked the canine’s owner after entering a home in the Indian state of West Bengal. Aruna Lama went to the storeroom after hearing some noise. As soon as Lama opened the door of the storeroom, a leopard leaped and attacked her. When she started screaming in pain, her pet dog rushed to the scene and fought off the leopard before chasing it into the woods. The woman received 20 stitches but was stable.
